Why we correct paint before we protect it

Film and coatings lock in whatever is underneath. Here is what paint correction removes, how we measure it, and when you can skip it.

Protection preserves, it does not repair

Every week someone asks if we can put a coating on today and skip the polishing. We understand why: correction is the most time-consuming part of any install. But coatings and film are clear. Whatever swirls, water spots and haze are on the paint when they go on will still be visible, just protected.

That is why every coating tier we offer includes at least a single-stage polish, and why we quote correction separately before film on any car with visible defects.

What correction actually removes

Paint correction levels the clear coat by removing a tiny amount of material around a defect. It addresses:

  • Swirl marks from automatic car washes and dirty towels.
  • Random isolated scratches that have not gone through the clear coat.
  • Water spot etching from sprinklers and hard water.
  • Oxidation and haze on older or sun-exposed paint.
  • Buffer trails and holograms from previous poor polishing.

Measuring before we cut

Clear coat on a modern car is thin, often around 35 to 50 microns. A careful correction removes only a few microns. The risk comes from not knowing how much is there, especially on cars with resprayed panels.

Before we polish, we take paint depth readings across every panel with a gauge and log them. Panels that read low get a gentler approach or are left alone. We then do a test spot with the least aggressive pad and polish combination and step up only if the result is not good enough. This is slower than polishing the whole car with a heavy compound, and it is the reason our clients can safely correct again in the future if they ever need to.

One stage, two stage or three

A one-stage polish uses a single combination that removes light defects and refines the finish at the same time. It typically removes around 60% of swirls and suits newer cars. Two-stage correction adds a dedicated cutting step and removes around 85%. Three stages, or more, are for show cars and deep defects on hard paint.

We recommend the lowest number of stages that gets your paint to a finish you will be happy with for years under protection, and we show you the test spot before committing.

When you can skip it

Genuinely new paint that has never been washed by a dealer is rare, but it exists. Special-order cars delivered straight from transport, or cars that arrive already protected, sometimes need only a decontamination wash. Film going onto a matte or satin finish is never polished, since polishing would add gloss.

For everything else, correction is the step that makes protection worth paying for. Book an inspection and we will show you your paint under swirl lights before recommending anything.
